Making headlines the entire weekend, street fashion and watchmaking collide in perfect harmony once again. Unveiling 2021’s most unexpected collaboration yet, Japanese streetwear brand, NEIGHBORHOOD and Japanese watchmaker, Seiko, unanimously teased an all-new Prospex diver timepiece via Instagram on Saturday, 10th January 2021.
As part of Seiko’s pre-existing LX line, the new edition will join an extensive collection of sports watches which date as recent as 2019. ‘LX’, inspired by the Latin word for light, is a subtle nod to the way that light is reflected in the broad, flat surfaces of each case. Striking the perfect balance between modern aesthetic sense and high practicality, the collection’s diver watches are regarded physical representations of the Antarctic, capturing the mysterious underwater forest at the bottom of a lake near Skarvsnes Foreland in Antarctica.
First introduced in 1965, the first batch of Seiko diver watches were trialed by researchers and explorers that ventured into harsh environments, and the timepieces continued to demonstrate high functionality even under demanding conditions. In an effort to illustrate the lake’s aquatic moss pillars, the original Prospex diver timepiece featured a green ceramic bezel, intended to express the breath of life cultivated over a long period in the Antarctic ground, with over 300m water resistance and a high-beat movement.
Unlike its predecessor, NEIGHBORHOOD x Seiko Prospex diver watch, showcases differing details in the form of, red triangle, red dial text branding, aged lume plots, and a faded-blue bezel. Marked ‘NEIGHBORHOOD TOKYO’ on the back, with an individual number engraved at the side, this timepiece is a tried-and-tested dive model that features 200 meters of water resistance, a 41-hour power reserve, and a protective shroud.
Limited to a mere 1,000 pieces, the NEIGHBORHOOD x Seiko Prospex diver watch will be available online on 15th January 2021, for an estimated ¥69,00 JPY ($665 USD).
